Blue Sarasar Kazak Rug
This blue Sarasar Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb wool and measures 350 x 278 cm, about 9.7 square metres. The deep blue field is covered in rows of small medallions in red, rust, gold and cream, and the wide cream border carries small red stars close to its outer edge.
The design up close
The field of this blue Sarasar Kazak rug is laid out as a regular grid of medallions, each outlined in rust, red or cream, with small diamond and hooked motifs filling the spaces between them. The colours change from one medallion to the next, so the grid reads as a patchwork of warm tones on the deep blue.
The centre row of this blue Sarasar Kazak rug is different. Five upright medallions sit side by side across the middle, with gold at each end, cream beside them and a red medallion at the centre. Their height and colour break the rhythm of the grid and draw the eye to the middle of the rug.
The border is a wide cream band with small star motifs in red and rust near the outer edge, framed by thin rust and red guard lines. Narrower bands of small geometric motifs separate the cream border from the navy field.
Kazak rugs take their name
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs.
How it is made
Each knot in this blue Sarasar Kazak rug was tied by hand on a loom, one knot at a time, so the medallions show clearly on the back as well. The lamb wool gives a soft pile across the whole deep blue ground.
Sizing this blue Sarasar Kazak rug
At 350 x 278 cm, this blue Sarasar Kazak rug covers about 9.7 square metres, which suits a large living room with a full lounge setting. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 65 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 55 cm at each end and 89 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. The deep blue works with cream walls, timber and warm red or gold furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
