Blue Medallion Kazak Rug
This blue medallion Kazak rug was made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 357 x 267 cm. A bright blue field carries three large medallions in a column, with a red octagon at the centre.
The design up close
The top and bottom medallions are cream with red centres and blue points, and the central medallion is a red octagon edged in gold and cream. Small diamond and star motifs in red, cream and gold sit between the medallions, and a ring of smaller shapes surrounds each large one. The red octagon is the darkest shape in the field, so it anchors the centre of the rug.
Along each side of the field, small medallions in red, cream and gold alternate with diamond shapes. The border is cream and white, with red and blue motifs in its rows, and an outer band of red and cream stripes frames the whole rug. This blue medallion Kazak rug keeps a steady rhythm of motifs from the top edge to the bottom edge.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured Kazak rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, and this blue medallion Kazak rug belongs to that revival. Kazak designs are known for bold geometry, and the medallions here follow that tradition closely.
How this blue medallion Kazak rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Lamb’s wool forms the pile here, and the blue ground runs in one even tone across the field. Medallion outlines are sharp where cream meets blue, and the red octagon carries a gold edge that separates it from the field. The blue ground is a single tone, so the medallions and diamonds carry all the detail across the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 357 x 267 cm, this blue medallion Kazak rug covers about 9.5 square metres. For a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 69 cm of rug showing past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. For a dining room, an eight seat table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves about 59 cm at each end and 84 cm along each side. With this blue medallion Kazak rug, the medallions stay visible from the seats.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
