Blue Medallion Abshari Rug
This blue medallion Abshari rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool and bamboo silk. It measures 239 x 176 cm, or about 4.2 square metres. The ground is a pale blue grey, and the medallions are picked out in blue, teal, green and yellow, so the whole rug reads as one even pattern.
The design up close
Octagonal medallions fill the field in neat rows, four across and five down. Each one is outlined in a deeper blue and filled with panels of teal, green, pale yellow and blue, with pink accents. Between them sit smaller diamond motifs in teal and pink, and fine blue lines link the grid so the medallions hold together.
On this blue medallion Abshari rug the border is a band of blue with cream rosettes, set beside a zigzag stripe in cream. The rosettes run in a row along the outer band, and the zigzag marks the line between the border and the ground. The pale field lets the blue medallions stand out as the main contrast, while the yellow and pink accents add warmth.
Afghan rugs and the Abshari design
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and they more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel than curving floral pieces. The medallion layout here is a geometric repeat, with the same shape set in every row. Thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so Afghan rugs are a good choice for hallways, entrances and family rooms, and this blue medallion Abshari rug suits a busy hallway well.
How it is made
The pile of this blue medallion Abshari rug is wool and bamboo silk, and our records note natural dyes. Each medallion is built up knot by knot on the loom, so its outline and the blue lines between them follow the weaver’s hand. Bamboo silk needs gentler handling than wool, so the care notes below include one extra point.
Sizing this blue medallion Abshari rug in your room
At 239 x 176 cm the rug covers about 4.2 square metres. A sofa of around 2.2 m can rest its front legs on it, and two armchairs can do the same around a coffee table. In a dining room it suits a table of about 180 x 90 cm, leaving 29.5 cm of rug past each end and 43 cm along each side. A blue medallion Abshari rug this size works well when the pale ground can be seen from the seating.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, and it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
