Blue Lamb Wool Kazak Rug
This blue lamb wool Kazak rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan and measures 307 x 199 cm, about 6.1 square metres. The mid blue field carries two large red medallions, one at the top and one at the bottom, and a square cream medallion with a red frame at the centre. The border is built from red, cream and navy bands that frame the field.
The design up close
Each large red medallion has a hexagonal centre with pointed lobes that reach into the field, edged in cream. The square cream medallion holds a deep blue diamond at its heart. Pairs of smaller cream and red medallions sit to the left and right, level with the centre, so the composition stays balanced.
Small stars, crosses and hooked shapes fill the spaces between the large motifs, in red, cream and navy. Dark star medallions sit in the four corners of the field, so the blue ground stays busy without looking crowded.
The border runs in several bands. A narrow navy edge with a fine stepped key pattern sits on the outside, then a wide cream band of small triangles and hooks in red and navy, then a red band and a navy band against the field. Together they give this blue lamb wool Kazak rug a strongly framed look.
Kazak rugs and their origins
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, and Kazak rugs like this one keep the bold geometry in thick lamb wool.
How it is made
Our records note double hand knotting, so each knot in this blue lamb wool Kazak rug was tied by hand on a loom, row after row. The design also shows on the back. Lamb wool gives the pile a soft surface underfoot.
Sizing this blue lamb wool Kazak rug
At 307 x 199 cm, this blue lamb wool Kazak rug covers about 6.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 44 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 64 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side. The mid blue suits pale timber and white or cream walls, and the red medallions bring warmth to a room with grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
