Blue Kerman Rizgol Rug
This blue Kerman Rizgol rug is a hand knotted Persian rug made in Iran, woven in wool and measuring 380 x 307 cm. Its field is a deep navy covered edge to edge with small flowers in cream, rose, red and gold, so the pattern reads as one rich texture from a distance. A wide sage green border frames the field, and the rug suits a formal living room or dining room.
The design up close
Almost the whole field is an all-over floral pattern with no central medallion. Small blossoms in cream, rose, red and gold sit on the navy ground, joined by thin pale green vines that wander across the rug. Where the vines cross, the flowers gather into loose rosettes, so the eye keeps finding new shapes.
The border is wide and sage green, carrying rows of small red and cream blossoms along its length. A narrow band of tan and rose sits between the border and the navy field, and a thin dark guard line frames the outer edge. The border turns each corner without a break, so this blue Kerman Rizgol rug looks complete from every side.
Kerman and its name
The name refers to Kerman, a city and province in south central Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran, and this rug is listed with the same origin.
How a blue Kerman Rizgol rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand, row after row, and then trim the pile to a level surface. The back carries the same design, with the small irregularities that come from hand knotting. Because the field holds so many small flowers, each one is a separate set of knots.
Sizing it for your room
At 380 x 307 cm, this blue Kerman Rizgol rug covers about 11.7 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 80 cm past each end of the sofa, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm sits with roughly 70 cm of rug at each end and about 104 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your blue Kerman Rizgol rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
