Blue Kerman Persian Rug
This blue Kerman Persian rug was hand knotted in Iran from wool and measures 370 x 287 cm, or about 10.6 square metres. Its field is a dense all-over floral pattern, dominated by red, rose and cream, with pale blue and navy accents.
The design up close
Small flowers, vines and leaves cover the field in a fine, close pattern, with rose and red blossoms standing out among cream and pale blue ones. At the centre, a medallion of lattice and blossoms in blue, rose and cream sits in the field, and the rest of the pattern is arranged around it.
Corner pieces in pale blue and cream frame the field at each corner. A dark navy outer band carries rose, pale blue and cream flowers, and several thin borders run between the field and the edge. The corner pieces are angular, which contrasts with the round blossoms in the centre.
On this blue Kerman Persian rug, red and rose flowers carry most of the colour, so the rug reads warm from across the room, and the blue shows mainly in the corners and the outer band.
Weaving in Iran
Every rug in our Persian collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. At over 10 square metres, this rug is a room-size piece. Colours in a dense floral field like this one look different by daylight and lamplight.
How a blue Kerman Persian rug is made
Our records note that it is finely knotted in pure wool. Turn this blue Kerman Persian rug over and the flowers show on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves. Each blossom is built up from small knots, row after row.
Sizing it for your room
At 370 x 287 cm, this blue Kerman Persian rug covers about 10.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 75 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 65 cm at each end and more than 90 cm along each side, so the chairs can slide back without leaving the rug.
The warm red and cream of this blue Kerman Persian rug suits cream walls and timber floors, where the rose and red flowers stand out. Its dense pattern works best in a room with plain upholstery, so the rug stays the focus.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
