Blue Kashmiri Tribal Rug
This blue Kashmiri tribal rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 253 x 168 cm. Its field is black, with rows of diamond shapes in grey, cream and gold.
The design up close
The black field is set out in rows of diamond shaped medallions. Each diamond has a dark centre edged in grey, cream and gold, and small gold dots fill the spaces between them. The diamonds sit close together, so the field reads as one tight, repeating pattern from a distance. Where the diamonds meet, the gold dots sit in the gaps, so the black ground never looks empty.
A band of cream and grey geometric motifs frames the field, with small black and white figures set into it. Beyond that, a thick dark border carries thin cream and dark stripes along its outer edges, and fringe finishes both ends of this blue Kashmiri tribal rug. The stripes along the top and bottom edges are narrow, so the border frames the field without pulling attention from it.
The cream and gold outlines stand out clearly against the black ground, so each diamond reads as its own shape. Because the field is so dark, the cream outlines carry most of the pattern.
Where Afghan rugs come from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces, and this blue Kashmiri tribal rug belongs to the tribal end of that range. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric designs, and this diamond pattern follows that tradition.
How this blue Kashmiri tribal rug is made
This rug is made from lamb’s wool, and its pile gives the diamonds crisp outlines against the black ground. The grey shading inside each diamond adds a second tone within each shape, and the cream and gold edges stand out clearly from it. The cream outlines are the lightest tone in the rug, so they set the rhythm of the pattern.
Sizing it for your room
At 253 x 168 cm, this blue Kashmiri tribal rug covers about 4.3 square metres. Its length is about 2.5 metres, so in a living room the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Placed in a room with pale walls, this blue Kashmiri tribal rug anchors the floor. A black field sits well with timber floors, and the cream and gold diamonds lift light furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
