Blue Kashmiri Rug
This blue Kashmiri rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 243 x 150 cm. The field is black, covered in rows of tan, cream and gold diamond motifs that link into a lattice, and a cream and tan border frames it. The border is lighter than the field, so the colours run from dark in the centre to pale at the edge.
The design up close
Diamonds set on a diagonal grid fill the black field from end to end. Each diamond is outlined in black and filled in tan, cream or gold, with a smaller motif in its centre, and the rows interlock so the whole field reads as one lattice. The pattern is the same from one end of the rug to the other.
A band of small cream and tan motifs frames the field, followed by a wider border of stepped and stripe patterns in cream, black and brown. Plain stripes run across both short ends, finished with a short fringe. The border frames the lattice on all four sides. The black ground makes the tan and gold motifs stand out, so the blue Kashmiri rug has a strong, graphic look.
Afghan weaving tradition
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and our Afghan rugs range from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Our Afghan collection includes Kazak, Khorjin, Chobi and Gabbeh designs, each with its own look. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time.
How a blue Kashmiri rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, so the design is built up row by row. A hand knotted rug shows its pattern on the back as well as the front, with small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. The pile is lamb’s wool, which is soft to the touch.
Its patterned field hides everyday wear, so this blue Kashmiri rug suits family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms. The black ground of this blue Kashmiri rug sits well with light timber and pale walls, where the tan and gold motifs stand out.
Sizing it for your room
At 243 x 150 cm the rug covers about 3.6 square metres. Its length is about 2.4 m, so the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. This blue Kashmiri rug suits a living room where the seating is grouped around the table. Bring your furniture measurements to the showroom and we will check the fit with you.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
