Blue Kashmar Persian Rug
This blue Kashmar Persian rug was double hand knotted in Iran from fine handspun lamb wool and measures 403 x 296 cm. Its design is a grid of framed panels, each holding a small scene of trees, birds, animals or urns in blue, rust, cream, sage and taupe. Our records note vegetable dyes. They suit the earthy rust, sage and taupe tones that run through the panels.
The design of this blue Kashmar Persian rug
Five columns of panels run the length of the rug, and each panel holds its own scene. Several show tall trees with deer or small animals beneath them, a few show peacocks or birds perched among branches, and others hold vases, columns with green cartouches between them, or red arched motifs. The panels sit on a dark brown ground that separates each scene from its neighbours.
Blue is among the strongest colours, in the trees and lilac borders of several panels, but cream, rust and sage come through just as strongly, so no single colour takes over the field. Each panel in this blue Kashmar Persian rug is outlined by a thin dark line, so the scenes read as separate pictures.
Persian weaving in Iran
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. At 11.9 square metres, this blue Kashmar Persian rug is room-size, so it belongs to that slow tradition.
Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing. Wool is soft, resilient and easy to live with, which makes it a practical choice for a room that is used every day.
How this rug is made
Our records note double hand knotting, so each knot in this kashmar rug was tied by hand on a loom. Fine handspun lamb wool gives the pile a soft hand, and close knotting keeps the small trees, birds and urns crisp in outline.
Sizing it for your room
At 403 x 296 cm this blue Kashmar Persian rug covers about 11.9 square metres, a size that suits a formal living room with a full lounge setting. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 92 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight seats leaves roughly 82 cm of rug at each end and 98 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. The cream and taupe tones suit light timber floors and neutral walls, where the blue panels stand out. A kashmar rug this size makes a clear focal point in a large room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
