Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug
This Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug is a hand-knotted piece from Iran, measuring 410 x 306 cm, or about 12.5 square metres. Its field is a soft ivory, and most of the colour sits in the grey blue and green border and in the medallion that fills the centre.
The design up close
A large lobed medallion fills the centre of the ivory field of this Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug. Its outline is cut in soft scallops, and inside it small flowers in blue, tan and rose sit among thin curling vines. At the heart of the medallion, a grey blue diamond holds a small rose coloured bloom, with stems running out from it toward the edges.
Grey blue corner pieces fill the four corners of the field, picking up the colour of the central diamond, so the eye moves from the middle out to the edges. Across the rest of the ivory ground, flowers and leaves repeat in close rows with no large open patches of plain colour. Blue, tan and yellowish flower heads are spread evenly, so no single motif takes over.
The border is broad and busy. Its outer band carries interlaced vines and small repeated motifs in grey blue and green, and a narrow inner band separates it from the field. Because the flowers stay small and the colours sit close in tone, the rug reads as one soft texture from a distance and as clear flowers when you stand over it.
How this Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is sheared level once the rows are complete. The foundation is cotton. Our records note very fine Persian knots on this rug, which is why the small flowers can be drawn so finely.
The pile is wool, and the design shows on the back of this blue Kashan Persian wool rug in reverse, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. Turning it over is the simplest way to see how evenly the rows were tied.
Sizing this Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug
At 410 x 306 cm this Blue Kashan Persian Wool Rug covers about 12.5 square metres, a size that suits a large living room or formal dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits with about 95 cm of rug beyond each end, so the front legs of the sofa and of armchairs set facing it can rest on the rug.
For a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves about 85 cm at each end and about 103 cm along each side. That gives the chairs room to slide back without leaving the rug. The ivory field works on light timber or pale tiles, and the grey blue border suits rooms with grey or blue furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
