Blue Kashan Kork Rug
This blue Kashan Kork rug is hand knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and measures 410 x 306 cm, or about 12.5 square metres. An ivory lobed medallion fills most of the field, with a grey blue centre, and a dense border in blue grey and sage surrounds it.
The design up close
The ivory field has a large lobed medallion shape that fills most of the rug, its edge scalloped and outlined in pale blue. Inside it, dense small flowers and curving vines in blue, grey, gold and cream cover the ground. A grey blue medallion sits at the centre with small darker motifs around it.
The ground outside the lobed field is blue grey and sage, filled with small flowers and leaves. Corner pieces sit where the ivory meets the border, in the same blue and grey as the outer ground, and they are less bright than the centre.
The border is wide and dense with small floral motifs in blue grey, sage and cream. Narrow bands of small repeating shapes run along its inner and outer edges. This blue Kashan Kork rug keeps the same calm palette all the way to its edge.
Pointed pieces in the same grey blue reach out from the left and right sides of the medallion, toward the ends of the lobed field. On this blue Kashan Kork rug the medallion is a diamond shape with a small pale centre.
How it is made
Our records note that this blue Kashan Kork rug is hand knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with very fine knots. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom, and the small flowers keep their shape across the whole field. Among our handmade traditional rugs, its size makes it a room-filling piece, so plan the space before you choose it.
Sizing a blue Kashan Kork rug for your room
At 410 x 306 cm the rug covers about 12.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits along its length with roughly 95 cm of rug showing past each end. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm (eight seats) leaves 85 cm of rug at each end and 103 cm along each long side, so chairs can be pulled out and stay on the rug.
A rug this size suits a large living room or open-plan space, where the blue grey border can frame a sofa group.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
