Blue Hamedan Medallion Rug
This blue Hamedan medallion rug is hand double knotted in wool, and it measures 194 x 127 cm. It comes from Iran, with a rust red field, a blue medallion at the centre and a navy border of pink and red zigzags. The palette is rich and settled, so the rug sets the colour of a room.
The design up close
The central medallion of this blue Hamedan medallion rug is a diamond shape in inky blue, with a small star in red and pink at its heart. Stepped and hooked edges run out from the medallion, with blue and red motifs between them. Around it the rust red ground carries smaller blue and cream motifs in hooked and angular shapes.
Dark blue corner pieces hold the four corners of the field, each with small red and cream motifs. A band of cream with small dark motifs frames the field, and the navy border carries a band of pink and red zigzags that give the rug a strong outline.
From a distance the medallion draws the eye, because its blue is the strongest contrast on the red ground, and the zigzags along the outer edge form a clear line. Up close the field is full of small angular motifs that repeat across the rust ground.
The Hamedan tradition
Hamedan is a province in western Iran, and Hamedan rugs are woven in the many villages around the city. Designs vary widely, from bold medallions to repeating geometric patterns, and warm reds, blues and camel tones are common. Most are tied with the symmetrical (Turkish) knot. This blue Hamedan medallion rug sits within that range, and every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran. Smaller Hamedan rugs suit hallways, entrances and bedrooms.
How a blue Hamedan medallion rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. The rug is wool and covers about 2.5 square metres of floor. Its pattern is detailed enough to read both up close and from across the room.
Sizing it for your room
At 194 x 127 cm, a blue Hamedan medallion rug suits a small living room, a sitting area or a space in front of an armchair. Its length is just under 2 m, so the front legs of a two-seat sofa, or of one armchair, can rest on it. Antique rugs of this size work best where the rug is the focus of a small group of furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
