Blue Geometric Vaziri Rug
This blue geometric Vaziri rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb wool and measures 362 x 268 cm, or about 9.7 square metres. A slate blue field carries six rows of rounded octagonal medallions, four across, each filled with colour in red, green, gold, cream, teal and navy. The layout is calm and orderly, and a multi-band border runs around the outside. Rugs like this suit rooms where the furniture is simple, because the pattern does the work.
The design up close
Across this blue geometric Vaziri rug, each medallion has a small square or diamond at its centre, with a ring of smaller shapes around it. The colours change from one medallion to the next, with red, green, gold and cream centres mixed through the grid. Between the medallions sit small diamond and cross motifs in rust, cream and teal, which fill the blue ground and link the rows together.
The border has several bands. The outer one holds a row of small floral and leaf motifs in rust, cream and red on grey-blue, and the narrower bands inside it repeat small shapes in stripes. The same border runs down both sides and across both ends, so the grid sits evenly inside it. A pale fringe finishes the top and bottom ends.
From a distance the medallions read as one grid of colour, and close up each one shows its own small pattern.
The grid of this blue geometric Vaziri rug holds six rows of four medallions, 24 in all. Between the grid and the outer border, a narrow strip of blue grey ground shows on every side, so the medallions sit inside a clear frame.
How Afghan rugs are made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and a room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. Some use wool that is spun by hand. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel, and this blue geometric Vaziri rug follows that with its repeated medallions.
Sizing your blue geometric Vaziri rug
At 362 x 268 cm, this blue geometric Vaziri rug covers about 9.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 71 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa sits on the blue field. For a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm (eight seats), the rug gives roughly 61 cm at each end and 84 cm along each side. Cream or white walls and timber floors suit the blue ground, and red or gold cushions pick up the medallions.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
