Blue Geometric Kazak Rug
This blue geometric Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 233 x 177 cm. The field is a steady blue, with a central column of medallions in red, cream and orange, and a cream border that lightens the whole rug.
The design up close
On this blue geometric Kazak rug, the central column alternates red, cream and orange medallions from top to bottom, with blue and rust centres. Smaller cream diamonds with red and blue centres sit on either side of the column, and small red and cream motifs fill the spaces between them. Together they make the field look ordered and balanced.
The cream border is wide and carries rows of small motifs in brown, red and navy. Beyond it, a narrower band of red and blue finishes the rug, so each edge is framed in two steps.
Where Kazak designs come from
Kazak rugs revive the bold, geometric designs first woven in the Caucasus. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, so the old patterns live on in new rugs such as this blue geometric Kazak rug.
How a blue geometric Kazak rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Each medallion in this blue geometric Kazak rug is built from many small knots, and a good Kazak has a dense pile and feels heavy for its size, which is why it wears so well.
Sizing it for your room
At 233 x 177 cm the rug covers about 4.1 square metres. Its 2.33 m length suits a seating group, because the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. With a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, roughly 26.5 cm of rug shows past each end and 43.5 cm along each side.
The cream border brightens a room with dark timber or grey walls, and the blue field sits well beside warm wood. A blue geometric Kazak rug of this size fits a living room or a dining room, and its thick wool suits a space that sees daily use. Kazak rugs suit living rooms, family rooms, entrances and hallways, and their warm colours sit well with timber floors and with both traditional and modern furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
