Blue Floral Kashan Rug
This blue floral Kashan rug has an ivory field covered in an all-over floral pattern, and it measures 415 x 300 cm, or about 12.5 square metres. The flowers are blue, grey and sand, set among navy and tan vines. Our records note that it is hand knotted from lamb’s wool on a cotton foundation.
The design of this blue floral Kashan rug up close
The field is ivory, filled in rows with rounded flower heads. Each head is a rosette with petals in two tones of blue, grey-green, sand and navy, and small curling vines in navy and tan link one flower to the next.
Across this blue floral Kashan rug, larger flower heads with a pale centre and dark outline alternate with smaller buds, which fill the gaps between them. The vines are fine enough that the field reads as texture from a distance.
A thin blue line frames the field, and the wide border is sage and sand with small repeated motifs and leafy scrolls. Several narrow guard stripes separate the border from the field, so the pale centre stands out clearly. Down the field, the flower heads sit in rows across the rug, so the eye travels along the lines rather than settling on one spot.
How it is made
Our records note that this blue floral Kashan rug is hand knotted from lamb’s wool on a cotton foundation. Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then trim the pile level.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Colour in your room
The ivory field of this blue floral Kashan rug stays light, so it suits timber floors and cream or grey walls. Its blue flowers pick up blue or grey upholstery well, and the sand tones sit comfortably beside warm neutrals. Place it where daylight falls across the flowers, since the ivory field shows its pattern most clearly in good light.
Sizing it for your room
This blue floral Kashan rug covers about 12.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with roughly 97.5 cm of rug showing past each end, so the rug can sit under the whole seating group. Armchairs placed on either side of a coffee table can rest their front legs on it as well.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 87.5 cm of rug at each end and 100 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Its pale ivory field shows marks sooner than a dark rug, so deal with spills straight away.
