Blue Diamond Ziegler Rug
This blue diamond Ziegler rug is a hand knotted Afghan rug in wool, measuring 263 x 186 cm, or about 4.9 square metres. Its field is a slate grey-blue framed by a broad cream border, with a diamond lattice in cream and gold running over the whole ground.
The design up close
The field of this blue diamond Ziegler rug is covered by a continuous lattice of cream and gold lines that curve and interlock to make a trellis of diamonds. In the centre of each diamond sits a pale aqua star-shaped rosette, and small gold rosettes mark the points where the lattice lines meet, so the pattern repeats evenly from the top of the rug to the bottom.
The border is broad and cream, with pale green and gold vine scrolls carrying small blossoms and leaves. A narrow gold guard stripe separates it from the field, and a thin blue-grey line finishes the outer edge. The lattice lines are cream and gold, so they stand out clearly against the grey-blue field. The colours are muted and sit close together, so the rug reads as one soft surface from across the room.
The Ziegler style
Many Chobi rugs follow Ziegler designs: soft-toned, large-scale patterns first made in the Sultanabad (Arak) district of Persia from the 1880s for European and American buyers. Chobi rugs often come in ivory, sand, soft green, rust and blue, and the grey-blue, cream and sage of this rug sits within that range. Chobi rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan, as this one is.
How this blue diamond Ziegler rug is made
Hand knotting builds the pile one knot at a time on a loom, row after row, and the lattice takes shape as the rows grow. Turn this blue diamond Ziegler rug over and the pattern shows on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves. The pile is wool.
Sizing it for your room
At 263 x 186 cm, this blue diamond Ziegler rug covers about 4.9 square metres. A sofa and two armchairs can rest their front legs on it around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 42 cm of rug at each end and 48 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back.
The grey-blue ground of this blue diamond Ziegler rug suits rooms with cream walls and timber floors, where the gold lines pick out the warm tones of the wood. In a room with white or cream walls, the grey-blue ground reads as a quiet backdrop for the lattice and rosettes.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
