Blue Contemporary Lotus Rug
This blue contemporary lotus rug was hand knotted in India in pure wool and measures 434 x 307 cm. Its cream ground carries a repeating design of blue lotus motifs and dark charcoal vines, with small brown flowers between them and a narrow charcoal border.
The design up close
Across this blue contemporary lotus rug, rows of blue teardrop-shaped motifs with pointed tops sit in a staggered grid, one above another down the length of the rug. Each one is set against a dark navy-grey fan shape, and small cream motifs sit between the rows.
Brown and tan vine scrolls fill the spaces between the blue shapes, and a dark charcoal vine border with curling tendrils frames the field. The blue is the strongest colour, while the cream and charcoal keep the design light and calm. Short fringe finishes the top and bottom ends.
The top and bottom of the rug carry the same grid of blue motifs as the middle, so the pattern runs the full length without a break. The charcoal vine border keeps the same width on all four sides.
How it is made
This blue contemporary lotus rug is hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand on a loom, row after row. The rug is pure wool throughout, and wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. The blue, cream and brown stay well apart in tone, so each motif reads clearly against the ground around it. The lotus in the name is the blue motif, with its pointed petal shape.
Sizing a blue contemporary lotus rug for your room
At 434 x 307 cm, this blue contemporary lotus rug covers about 13.3 square metres, which suits a large living room or open lounge area. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 107 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 97 cm at each end and about 104 cm along each side. A rug this large is best placed so the sofa and dining table sit fully inside its edges.
Its cream and blue tones suit timber floors, white walls and grey or blue furnishings.
Its cream ground keeps a large room bright, while the blue motifs give the floor a clear colour to build around. Charcoal sofas and blue cushions repeat the rug’s palette, and a plain grey wall lets the pattern carry the room. Because the rug is so large, the pattern works best as the main feature of the room, with plain furniture around it.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this blue contemporary lotus rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
