Blue Chobi Ghazni Wool Rug
This blue Chobi Ghazni wool rug is a long runner, hand double knotted in Afghanistan and measuring 342 x 86 cm. Its deep blue field and cream gold border make a strong, calm line down a room. Our records note vegetable dyes, and it is a blue Afghan rug with soft gold tones.
The design up close
The deep blue field holds cream and gold flower heads set in pairs down its length, linked by thin grey vines that curve from one motif to the next. A large central medallion, cream gold with a blue centre, sits in the lower middle of the field as a clear focal point.
The border is wide and cream gold, with small blue and rust crosses, rosettes and leaf shapes in a row along each edge. A narrow blue guard line separates it from the field, and fringe finishes the bottom end.
Blue rugs can look heavy, but the light gold drawing keeps this one open. This blue Chobi Ghazni wool rug may shift slightly in tone where the light falls across it, an effect of the vegetable dyes.
Chobi rugs and their designs
The name Chobi means wood, a nod to the soft, natural tones these rugs are known for. Chobi rugs are often hand knotted in Afghanistan in hand-spun wool, and many follow Ziegler designs: large-scale patterns first made in the Sultanabad district from the 1880s for European and American buyers.
Chobi rugs often come in ivory, sand, soft green, rust and blue, and are often washed after weaving to soften the colours further. A deep blue ground is a strong colour within that range, and it suits pale floors and walls.
How a blue Chobi Ghazni wool rug is made
Our records note a hand double knotted build. Natural dyes give gentle changes of shade across a field, called abrash, which is valued as a sign of handwork rather than a fault.
Each knot is tied by a weaver on a loom, row after row, so the knots are slightly irregular. The back of a hand knotted rug should show the design clearly, knot by knot.
Sizing it for your room
At 342 x 86 cm the runner covers about 2.9 square metres. Its width suits a hallway about 1.1 to 1.2 metres wide, since the runner plus 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side gives 106 to 126 cm. At 3.4 metres long, it runs well down a long hallway or along a galley kitchen.
This blue Chobi Ghazni wool rug also suits the side of a bed, where it can sit beside the mattress. Cream or pale walls let the gold border show clearly, and timber floors give the blue a warm contrast.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
In a hallway, a blue Chobi Ghazni wool rug meets the most foot traffic, so vacuum that section more often and check the pile each season.
