Black Transitional Wool Rug
This black transitional wool rug was made in India in wool and silk, and it measures 244 x 305 cm. Its near black ground carries pale silver grey and rose beige motifs, centred on an angular medallion, and the rug covers about 7.4 square metres.
The design up close
At the centre, a stepped, angular medallion is outlined in silver grey, with a pale rose beige star inside it. Smaller pendant shapes sit at the top and bottom of the medallion, and the corners of the field hold partial medallions of similar pale motifs.
Across this black transitional wool rug, the ground around the medallion is covered with small floral sprays and vines in pale grey, silver and beige, so the field has a fine, busy texture. In places the pale motifs seem to sink into the dark ground, which gives the rug a softened look. A wide border of floral scrolls frames the field, set between several narrow guard stripes.
Moving outward from the medallion, the field gives way to a band of smaller motifs before the wider border, and the layers of guard stripes make the edge look framed. The medallion is centred in the field, so it is the first thing the eye reads when you walk in.
How it is made
This black transitional wool rug is hand knotted in India, so each knot is tied by hand on a loom. Our records note German dyes. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and this one pairs wool with silk.
Sizing a black transitional wool rug for your room
At 244 x 305 cm, this black transitional wool rug covers about 7.4 square metres, and its 305 cm length suits a living room with a three-seat sofa. The sofa leaves about 42.5 cm of rug past each end, so its front legs and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 32.5 cm at each end and 72 cm along each side. Its dark ground suits pale timber floors, light walls and neutral furnishings.
Because the rug is dark and detailed, it works as the main feature of a room, with plain cushions and a light sofa around it so the pattern is not crowded. Its 305 cm length suits a living room rather than a narrow hallway. Pale stone or light tiled floors show the dark ground clearly.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this black transitional wool rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
