Beige Vintage Neshaboor Rug
This beige vintage Neshaboor rug was double hand knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool and measures 383 x 298 cm. Its design is pictorial, with architecture, animals and figures set in a dark navy centre and two oval panels. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The field is divided into panels. A dark navy centre holds a cluster of birds, flowers and small figures, and a band of script runs across the upper part of it. Two oval panels on either side show animals in a landscape of green and blue, set into rose-coloured frames.
Architecture frames the scene. Arches, columns and a domed building appear at the top, and a row of arches stands above a band of small flowers at the base. Two urn-shaped vases on pedestals sit in the lower corners, flanked by pale blue fans with red and gold palmettes.
The outer border is tan and beige with trailing vines and small motifs, which keeps the busy centre contained. This beige vintage Neshaboor rug has navy, rose, green, gold and pale blue in the same field, so it works best where the room around it is calm.
Persian rugs and their makers
Every Persian rug is hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool. Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing: a rug hand knotted in Iran. Seeing a Persian carpet in person is the best way to judge its colour, pile and fineness, and the detail of a pictorial piece like this beige vintage Neshaboor rug is easiest to judge in person.
How a beige vintage Neshaboor rug is made
Double hand knotted means each knot is tied by hand around two warp threads, which gives a firmer pile than a single knot. The lamb’s wool is handspun, and the pile is sheared level once the knotting is finished, which keeps the fine pictorial lines clear.
Sizing it for your room
At 383 x 298 cm the rug covers about 11.4 square metres, a size for a large living room where a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table all sit on it. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 81 cm of rug showing at each end. A beige vintage Neshaboor rug this size suits a room with plain walls and calm upholstery, since the panels already carry plenty of colour.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 71 cm at each end and about 99 cm along each side, so the chairs have room to slide back. A beige vintage Neshaboor rug in this size would suit a large dining room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
