Beige Qum Persian Rug
This beige Qum Persian rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from lamb wool, and it measures 202 x 197 cm, close to square.
The field of this beige Qum Persian rug is an ivory cream, the lightest part of the rug. A deep red medallion sits at its centre, and navy and blue make up the border. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
A deep red medallion sits at the centre, shaped like a long lozenge with pointed ends. Its outline is navy and cream, and its inner panel holds small blue, cream and gold details. Pendants in red and blue reach out from the top and bottom points toward the ends of the field.
Across this beige Qum Persian rug, vines in red, rust, blue and green curl across the ivory ground on every side of the medallion. Each corner holds a pale quarter medallion with its own spray of leaves, which links the centre to the border. The sprays are small and close, so the field reads as one patterned surface from a distance.
The border is wide and dark navy, with large palmette flowers in red, rust, ivory, blue and green. A thin cream guard line and a red outer edge frame it. Inside, a narrow band of small gold and green flowers separates the navy from the field.
Persian rugs and where they are made
Persian rugs and Persian carpets mean the same thing: a rug hand knotted in Iran. Each one is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. This rug is lamb wool, so the fibre named for it is wool.
How a beige Qum Persian rug is made
This beige Qum Persian rug is hand knotted from lamb wool. Each knot was tied by hand, so the navy border flowers and the red medallion show the slightly uneven edges that hand work leaves. Each motif is built from single knots, so the scrolls of the medallion are formed from small blocks of colour.
Sizing it for your room
At 202 x 197 cm, this beige Qum Persian rug is close to square and covers about 4.0 square metres. Its length is just over two metres, so the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. That suits a lounge where the seating is grouped around a central point.
A rug this size works best where the furniture sits close together around a central table. Pale grey or timber floors let the ivory field stand out, and the navy border frames the seating area.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
