Aqua Blue Afghan Design Rug
This aqua blue Afghan design rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in wool and measures 202 x 153 cm, about 3.1 square metres. Teal and aqua tones fill the field, with tan and cream accents and a wide border of small rosettes, so the whole rug reads as one cool blue-green surface.
The design up close
Two large octagonal medallions sit near the top and bottom of the field, each teal at the centre with cream and tan rings. Between them, a cream-outlined star-shaped motif in teal and rust holds the middle of the rug. The field around these shapes is covered with small repeating geometric motifs in blue, cream, rust and tan, forming a fine lattice across the ground. The cream and teal rings around the medallions separate them clearly from that lattice.
The border is built in layers. A wide teal band carries rows of small octagonal rosettes in tan and blue, set into square panels, and a narrow inner stripe separates it from the field. Short fringe in several colours finishes the top and bottom ends. This aqua blue Afghan design rug has a border that is almost as busy as its centre, so the eye keeps moving across the surface.
Mamluk design from Afghanistan
The layout of this rug follows a Mamluk style. Mamluk rugs reinterpret the geometric carpets of the Mamluk era, and the two medallions and central star repeat that geometry. Afghan weavers hand knot pieces like this one, one knot at a time, on a loom. Rugs in this layout keep the central star and paired medallions, so the composition reads clearly from a distance.
How it is made
This aqua blue Afghan design rug is double hand knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes. The pile is wool, with teal at the medallions and tan and cream accents across the field.
Sizing an aqua blue Afghan design rug
This aqua blue Afghan design rug covers about 3.1 square metres. Because it is about two metres long, the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. This size also suits a bedroom, where it can sit beside the bed. This size also sits well in a sitting area with an armchair and a side table, where the border can be seen from both sides.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
