Mamluk Rugs
Mamluk rugs reinterpret the geometric carpets made in the Mamluk era, with central medallions built from octagons and stars and finely detailed borders. Ours are hand knotted in Afghanistan and range from traditional reds to soft, washed tones.
The history behind the design
The Mamluks ruled Egypt and Syria from 1250 to 1517, and the carpets woven in Cairo from the late 15th century, and into the 16th, are known for their kaleidoscopic designs: medallions built from octagons, stars and small geometric shapes, filling the whole rug. Weavers in Afghanistan revive these designs today.
What to look for
- Geometry. A central medallion made of nested octagons and stars, with fine repeating detail around it.
- Colour. Traditional reds, greens and blues, or soft, washed tones that give a vintage feel.
- Wool and dyes. Hand-spun wool and natural dyes give depth and gentle variation in shade.

Mamluk rugs bring structure and pattern without feeling busy, so they suit living and dining rooms in both traditional and modern homes. The washed-colour pieces work especially well with timber floors and neutral furniture.
