Taupe Pine Tree Design Rug
This taupe pine tree design rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan from Gazney wool and measures 378 x 270 cm. Its brown-taupe field is covered with rows of pale tree forms in cream, ivory and gold, with touches of red, and a broad plain border frames the whole piece. It is a large rug with a soft, earthy palette that suits a spacious room.
The design up close
Two tall, pointed cream forms rise up the centre of the field, one on each side of a slender tree that runs between them. Around these, branching stems spread outwards and upwards, each carrying small flowers, buds and leaf shapes in cream, pale gold and red. Small red dots sit among the stems, so the red stays minor and the taupe ground stays dominant.
The border is built in two parts. The outer band is a broad, plain taupe strip, and the inner band is a narrow run of small cream and red motifs between fine gold lines. The plain outer band keeps the eye on the trees inside, so this taupe pine tree design rug reads as one calm picture rather than a busy frame.
Rosettes in cream and red sit near the top and bottom of the field, and the tree rows repeat across its width. Look at the rows near the top and bottom and the motifs shift slightly from one row to the next.
Where this Afghan rug comes from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition. Afghan designer rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and a room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. Some use hand-spun wool coloured with natural dyes from plants such as madder, which gives the slight variations in colour that make each rug individual.
How it is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. The taupe pine tree design rug is double hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand, and its pile is Gazney wool. The cream, gold and red motifs are knotted into the same taupe field.
Sizing this taupe pine tree design rug for your room
At 378 x 270 cm the rug covers about 10.2 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, it runs roughly 79 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 69 cm at each end and 85 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back.
This taupe pine tree design rug sits well with cream walls, timber floors and neutral furniture, and the tree rows give a plain room something to look at.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
