Sky Blue Sarasar Kazak Rug
This sky blue Sarasar Kazak rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 246 x 172 cm. Its sky blue ground is covered with small motifs in loose rows, which makes it a large, bright piece for a living room. A cream border with red and blue-grey rosettes frames the whole field.
The design up close
The sky blue field is covered from edge to edge with small scattered motifs set in loose rows. Small red and cream stars sit alongside hooked crosses, and tiny flowers in orange, cream and red fill the gaps between them. Because the motifs are small and spread evenly, the field reads as texture from across the room and as clear shapes up close.
The cream border is wide and carries a band of red and blue-grey rosettes and small square motifs. A narrow red stripe runs along its inner edge, so the sky blue field stands apart from the border. The stripe is narrow, so the blue field and the cream border meet in one clean line along each side. Look at the ends of this sky blue Sarasar Kazak rug and you can follow the border repeat straight across each one.
Where Kazak designs come from
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs, so pieces like this one carry an old pattern into new rooms.
How a sky blue Sarasar Kazak rug is made
Weavers tie every knot in this sky blue Sarasar Kazak rug by hand on a loom, working one row at a time. A room-size rug such as this one can take a small team of weavers many months. On the back the design reads clearly, with the small irregularities that come from tying each knot by hand. Lamb’s wool gives the pile its soft surface.
Sizing it for your room
At 246 x 172 cm this sky blue Sarasar Kazak rug covers about 4.2 square metres. The front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table, so the rug anchors the seating as a whole. Pale cream and timber furnishings let the sky blue ground show, and the red and cream motifs pick up any warm tones already in the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
