Sky Blue Medallion Kazak Rug
This sky blue medallion Kazak rug was made by Afghan artisans in lamb’s wool and measures 242 x 167 cm. A sky blue field carries three medallions down the centre, in red, cream and navy, inside a cream border.
The design up close
The largest medallion sits in the middle, cream with a red and navy centre and a ring of red points. A red medallion with a cream centre sits above it and another below, and navy shield shapes stand at each side of the field. Small red, cream and orange florals fill the space between the medallions.
Across this sky blue medallion Kazak rug, the cream border is set with small red and navy diamonds in a lattice, and the outer edge is red. The pattern is busy but orderly, so the medallions stay the focus from any seat in the room.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name Kazak comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. Weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived those designs in recent decades. This sky blue medallion Kazak rug carries three large medallions in the same tradition.
How it is made
This sky blue medallion Kazak rug is hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom and the pile was sheared level afterwards.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that handwork leaves. Lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft feel.
Sizing your Sky Blue Medallion Kazak Rug
At 242 by 167 cm, the rug covers about 4.0 square metres. With a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug shows roughly 31 cm at each end, so the table sits fully on the rug. In a lounge room, a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 11 cm of rug past each end, so its front legs sit just inside the edge. Before you decide, mark the rug’s outline on the floor with masking tape, and walk around it to see how it sits in the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
