Sky Blue Kazak Rug
This sky blue Kazak rug was made in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 221 x 182 cm. Its field is a soft blue, framed by a wide ivory border with rust and red accents. Medallions in red, gold and cream run down the centre, and the design reads as bold geometry from across the room. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
Five large medallions run down the centre of this sky blue Kazak rug, alternating between red and gold, with cream detail at the heart of each. Smaller cream and red diamonds, each with a tiny rosette, fill the spaces between them and scatter across the blue ground in loose rows. The same few colours repeat throughout, so the rug feels busy but ordered.
The border is ivory, patterned with small red, rust and navy motifs in a repeating band. A narrow guard stripe separates it from the blue field, so the central medallions stand apart from the frame.
The blue ground is the first thing the eye reads, and it sits against the ivory border so the red and gold medallions stand out. Between the large medallions, the cream diamonds keep the spacing even, so no part of the field feels empty. Laid on a timber floor, the cool blue sits well against the warm rust tones in the border.
Kazak rugs and where the design comes from
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, and this sky blue Kazak rug carries that old pattern into a new rug.
How a sky blue Kazak rug is made
A sky blue Kazak rug like this one is hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Turn a hand-knotted Kazak over and the design shows on the back, with small irregularities where each knot was tied by hand, so you can check the work for yourself.
Sizing it for your room
At 221 x 182 cm this sky blue Kazak rug covers about 4.0 square metres. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves about 20.5 cm of rug past each end and 46 cm along each side, enough for chairs to pull back and still sit on the rug. Its blue and warm reds sit well with timber floors and with cream or grey walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Daylight changes how the blue reads across the day, so look at the rug near a window before you decide where it should go.
