Salmon Vintage Tabriz Rug
This salmon vintage Tabriz rug is hand double knotted in wool and measures 370 x 277 cm. The centre is a pale blue grey with a khaki gold medallion, rose and salmon washes run across the lower and right side of the field, and the wide outer border is coral salmon, worked with cream and blue scrolls.
The design up close
The medallion is lobed and olive gold, with a red and cream motif at its heart. Cream scrolls with blue leaves curl around it, and a blue corner shape sits in each corner of the field, outlined in cream.
Around the medallion, the pale blue grey ground carries small blue leaves and flowers. The rose and salmon tones sit mainly in the lower and right areas, where the ground looks warmer and more worn. The khaki tone of the medallion is the deepest colour in the centre, and the cream scrolls lift it from the blue ground.
An ivory band with blue and cream vines frames the field. The outer border is a coral salmon band with cream and blue scrolls, rosettes and small leaves, and a thin grey blue guard runs at the edge.
How a salmon vintage Tabriz rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting in wool, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. This piece is over-dyed in a salmon hue, and that over-dye carries the pink and coral tones through the rug. The over-dye sits over the blue of the centre and corners, which keeps the blues visible within the warmer palette. The vintage finish has softened the cream and blue, so the colours read as muted.
Colour in your room
A salmon vintage Tabriz rug suits rooms with cream walls, timber floors, and grey or blue furnishings. The salmon border brings warmth to a room, and the blue corners pick up blue cushions or art. Vintage rugs of this colour work in both traditional and modern homes.
Sizing it for your room
At 370 x 277 cm this salmon vintage Tabriz rug covers about 10.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 75 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 65 cm at each end and 88.5 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. Its length suits a dining room with a long table, or a living room where the sofa and armchairs share the floor. Vintage rugs at this size suit a large lounge.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
