Rust Vintage Overdyed Rug
This rust vintage overdyed rug measures 413 x 292 cm and is made of wool. Its field is built around a large rust medallion with a cream centre, set on a sage green ground and framed by a cream border with tan and olive scrolls. It is a vintage piece, shaved back and over-dyed in rust to intensify the design, so the colours look soft and aged. Among our vintage rugs, it is a large piece in a warm, muted palette.
The design up close
A large medallion in rust fills most of the field. Its lobes are built from clusters of small flowers, and a cream centre with grey green detail sits at its middle. Around the medallion the ground is sage green, with faded tan and cream flowers scattered across it, so the rust reads as one bold shape. This rust vintage overdyed rug also has a sage ground in each corner, with small rust and cream motifs.
A narrow stripe in cream and olive separates the field from the main border. The border is cream, with tan and olive vine scrolls that curl around small flowers and buds. Thin bands in the same colours run inside and outside it, so the border frames the warm centre.
Why the colour looks soft
Like other overdyed rugs, this piece looks softer than a new one. The design is less crisp, and the cream border shows marks and fading in places, particularly along its edges. Some of the original drawing still shows through the rust, so the pattern looks layered. This rust vintage overdyed rug suits rooms where you want colour with some age in it.
How a rust vintage overdyed rug is made
Our records note that this rug is hand double knotted from wool. The over-dye came after weaving: the rug was shaved back and then dyed again to intensify the design and patterns. Rust is the main colour in the medallion, and the over-dye is what brings it forward against the cream and sage.
Sizing it for your room
At 413 x 292 cm the rug covers about 12.1 square metres, which suits a large living room or dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m fits along one long side, with roughly 97 cm of rug showing at each end. Two armchairs and a coffee table can sit on the same rug, which pulls the seating together.
A rust vintage overdyed rug of this size also works under a dining table. A table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 87 cm of rug at each end and 96 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back without leaving the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
The cream border is the lightest part of the rug, so check that edge after a busy week.
