Red Wine Kazak Rug
This red wine Kazak rug was double hand-knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 193 x 151 cm, about 2.9 square metres. Its deep red field carries rows of cream-outlined tree and vase motifs, inside a wide cream border.
The design up close
The red field is laid out in open columns. Down the centre of this red wine Kazak rug, tall vase-like panels outlined in cream stand in rows, each filled with stripes in red, navy, orange and cream. Between the panels, slender trees with cream branches reach up the field.
Small cream and orange rosettes, leaf sprigs and little trees fill the spaces around the central panels, and the rosettes come in pairs, one on each side. Near the top and bottom, a row of cream and red shapes runs across the field, and a tree in cream stands at each side of the design.
The wide cream border carries small red, navy and orange motifs and a row of rosettes, with thin guard stripes in red and brown between the border and the field. In this red wine Kazak rug the cream frame makes the red look deep.
Where Kazak rugs come from
The Kazak design comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, close to today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Its weavers were known for thick, boldly coloured rugs with geometric medallions, stars and hooked shapes in deep reds, blues and ivory. Those patterns have been revived in recent decades by weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
How it is made
Weavers in Afghanistan tie each knot by hand on a loom, one knot at a time, and this red wine Kazak rug is double hand-knotted. The vase panels and the trees are built up row by row, so their outlines run in small steps.
Our records note German dyes.
Sizing a red wine Kazak rug for your room
At 193 x 151 cm the rug is under 2.6 m long, so place it in front of a sofa with the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs resting on it around a coffee table. Its 151 cm width sits just inside the 153 cm of a queen bed, so it can lie at the foot of a queen bed without going past its sides.
With an area of about 2.9 square metres, this red wine Kazak rug suits a living room or family room. The busy pattern hides everyday wear, which is why Kazak rugs suit entrances and hallways too.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
