Red Vintage Overdyed Rug
This red vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted wool, measuring 394 x 292 cm, or about 11.5 square metres. A deep crimson over-dye covers the field, with a darker medallion at the centre and a raspberry-toned border. The border is a shade lighter than the field in places, which gives the rug a clear outer frame.
The design of this red vintage overdyed rug up close
The medallion at the centre of this red vintage overdyed rug is darker than the field, a lobed shape made of small scalloped petals. Small diamond motifs sit on either side of it, and its outline has softened into broken edges. The medallion’s outline is drawn in a deeper maroon than the red around it.
Lighter pink patches run across the field, and faint scrolls and leaves show through the red in places. The border has several bands: a wide outer band of small repeated motifs, with narrow guard stripes between them. The corners of the field hold smaller motifs in the same deep red, so the field looks even from edge to edge.
How it is made
Our records note that this red vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted. Each knot was tied by hand on a loom, and the finished rug was then over-dyed in red, which gives it depth and warmth.
The over-dye is the main change to the rug’s colour, and the design remains visible beneath it.
Colour in your room
The strong red tone sits well with cream, grey and charcoal furnishings, which calm it down. This red vintage overdyed rug works best as a single bold piece in a room with neutral walls. Strong direct sun can fade any dyed rug over time, so keep it out of the hottest window light where you can.
Sizing it for your room
At 394 x 292 cm, this red vintage overdyed rug suits a large living room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 87 cm of rug showing past each end. The rug is long enough for a sofa and two armchairs to sit around a coffee table on it.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 77 cm of rug at each end and 96 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. A dining room of this size can take a larger table, since the rug spans about 3.9 m.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
