Red Medallion Kazak Rug
This red medallion Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 199 x 146 cm. Three medallions run down a deep red field, and a cream border with red and blue motifs frames the whole rug. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
The top and bottom medallions are edged in navy and filled with salmon, cream and gold. The middle medallion is ringed in blue and cream, with a red centre that picks up the field colour. Between and beside the medallions, small crosses, diamonds and rosettes in cream, blue and navy sit on the red ground, so the centre reads as a column of motifs.
The border is cream, with bands of stepped red, navy and blue motifs. A narrow blue stripe separates the border from the field. On a neutral floor the pattern stays readable from across the room as well as up close, so the red medallion Kazak rug works as a focal point.
Kazak rugs and where their designs come from
Kazak rugs revive the bold geometric designs first woven in the Caucasus. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, so the old patterns live on in new Kazak rugs made to last.
How a red medallion Kazak rug is made
This is a hand knotted Kazak, so every knot was tied by hand on a loom. Turn it over and the design shows on the back too, with small irregularities in the knots that come from handwork. The pile is lamb’s wool, which feels soft underfoot.
Busy geometric designs hide everyday wear, so a red medallion Kazak rug suits living rooms, family rooms, entrances and hallways. Its warm red ground sits well with timber floors and with traditional or modern furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 199 x 146 cm the rug covers about 2.9 square metres. Its length is just under 2 m and its width about 1.5 m, so the red medallion Kazak rug suits a spot beside a bed, a study desk or a reading chair rather than a large lounge setting. At the foot of a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, it sits almost the full width of the bed. Bring your furniture measurements to the showroom and we will check the fit with you.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
