Red Hamedan Persian Rug
This red Hamedan Persian rug is a Persian rug, hand double knotted in Iran from pure wool. It measures 233 x 170 cm, or about 4.0 square metres, and its rose-red field holds a large diamond medallion in dark brown, black and cream.
The design of this red Hamedan Persian rug up close
A large diamond medallion fills the centre of the field, its points reaching toward the sides. It is built from smaller diamonds and step motifs in black, cream and orange, with a small square of gold at its heart.
The field around the medallion is rose-red, close to salmon, and smaller geometric motifs in cream, orange and grey-blue fill the spaces. Dark brown and black corner pieces hold more step and diamond shapes, each one outlined in cream.
The border of this red Hamedan Persian rug is the darkest band, black and dark brown, with rows of cream and orange step motifs and a thin dotted white line along its inner edge. Against that dark frame the rose-red field looks lighter.
Hamedan rugs and their weave
Hamedan is a province in western Iran, and rugs as Hamedan are woven in the many villages around the city. Designs vary widely from village to village, from bold medallions to repeating geometric patterns, and this rug combines a central medallion with geometric detail across the field.
Hamedan rugs are most often tied with the symmetrical (Turkish) knot. Warm reds, blues and camel tones are common, and the rose, brown and black of this rug sits within that warm range.
How it is made
Our records note that this red Hamedan Persian rug is hand double knotted. Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, one at a time, and the design shows on the back with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
This red Hamedan Persian rug is made from pure wool. Hamedan rugs are known for sturdy wool and simple designs, and this one suits everyday rooms that get regular use.
Sizing it for your room
At 233 x 170 cm, this red Hamedan Persian rug suits the kinds of rooms that suit smaller Hamedan rugs, such as entrances and bedrooms.
At 2.33 m long, the rug sits between 2 and 2.6 m, so the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
A dining table of about 180 x 90 cm would sit close to the edges, with roughly 26.5 cm of rug at each end and 40 cm along each side, so the chairs may sit partly off it when pulled back.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
