Red Golgohar Persian Runner
This red Golgohar Persian runner is made in Ardebil in Iran from pure wool, and measures 332 x 105 cm, about 3.5 square metres. Its rust red ground carries a row of geometric medallions from end to end, framed by a dark green and brown border.
The design up close
Five medallions run down the centre of this red Golgohar Persian runner. Navy stars sit at either end of the row and a cream star in the middle, with a round red and blue-grey rosette between each pair. Cream corner pieces and small red and green motifs fill the spaces around them. The navy stars are the darkest points on the runner, so they anchor each end of the row.
The border is dark, with rows of small dotted rosettes in brown and green, and narrow guard lines between the border and the rust red field. The guard lines keep the border separate from the field, so each part reads clearly. The pattern is angular and geometric, which gives the runner a tribal look.
Motifs repeat at the same spacing down the length, so the eye travels from one medallion to the next. On this red Golgohar Persian runner the navy and cream stars carry the design, so the red ground reads as a warm backdrop along the whole length.
Persian weaving and this runner
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom. Our records note hand double knotting for this runner, which is made from pure wool.
A red Golgohar Persian runner suits a long hallway, where its geometric pattern can be seen from either end. The 332 cm length gives a long stretch of pattern, so it suits a narrow corridor better than a short entry. Its pattern is strongest along the centre, so the runner shows most of its design as you walk its length.
Sizing this red Golgohar Persian runner
At 332 x 105 cm this red Golgohar Persian runner is made for a hallway. Allow a floor width of about 125 to 145 cm, which is the runner’s 105 cm plus 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side. A hallway of that width leaves room to pass a door without the runner sitting under the swing of the door.
In a kitchen galley, it runs along the benches with the length of the runner following the walkway. Keep the ends clear of doorways so the runner does not catch on foot traffic.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
