Red Geometric Abshari Rug
This red geometric Abshari rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in New Zealand wool and measures 242 x 173 cm. Vertical columns of diamond medallions fill a red-orange field, linked by blue zigzag lines, inside a cream border.
Blue zigzags run between the columns, so the whole field reads as one continuous lattice.
The design up close
Diamond medallions stand in vertical columns down the length of this red geometric Abshari rug. Each one has a cream or orange centre, with blue and lilac rings around it, and blue zigzag lines link one column to the next. The pattern runs as one continuous rhythm from end to end, and there is no central medallion.
The red-orange ground shows between the columns and is the main colour across the rug. A cream border carries small blue dashes and red and green motifs, and a narrow outer band in orange and red frames the whole piece.
Each column contains the same sequence of medallions, so the rug has a clear vertical order.
Small blue and red marks sit in the cream border at regular intervals, so it reads as a steady band.
Afghan weaving
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and they more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, with a heavier, more relaxed feel. The lattice of diamonds and zigzags in this red geometric Abshari rug follows that bold geometric style.
The diamonds sit in tight rows, so the lattice reads as one texture from across the room.
Red, blue and orange carry the design, and cream frames it.
How it is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. The wool is New Zealand wool, and the rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. The zigzags and diamonds are formed by rows of knots, and the colours of this red geometric Abshari rug are knotted into the pile.
The blue zigzags are knotted as a continuous line through the red ground.
Sizing your Red Geometric Abshari Rug
At 242 x 173 cm the rug covers about 4.2 square metres. Under a 180 x 90 cm dining table it leaves about 31 cm of rug at each end. At 2.42 m long, it sits in the range where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
In a bedroom, at the foot of a double bed 138 cm wide, its length runs about 52 cm past each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
