Red Floral Tabriz Runner
This Red Floral Tabriz Runner is a hand knotted runner from Iran, measuring 330 x 85 cm, or about 2.8 square metres. Its bright red field is covered with an all over floral design in cream, pink and blue, inside a navy border with small cream and gold flowers.
The design up close
Medallions run along the centre of this Red Floral Tabriz Runner, each one a palmette shape in cream and pale blue with soft petals and a small central bloom. Between them the red ground fills with small flowers in cream, pink and blue, and green leaves on thin stems.
The pattern is all over and spaced evenly, so the runner reads as one continuous garden of small flowers rather than a set of separate shapes. The larger centre motifs give the eye a path along the length, and the smaller flowers fill in the spaces between them.
The border is navy, with a band of small cream and gold flowers running along it. Two narrow guard stripes, one cream and one pink, sit between the border and the field, so the red reads clearly against the navy. The navy border holds the bright field in place.
Where this Red Floral Tabriz Runner comes from
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs. Those designs run from classic central medallions to all over floral patterns, and this runner’s floral layout sits within that range.
Since the mid 19th century, Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface. Every Tabriz rug here is hand knotted in Iran, one knot at a time on a loom.
How this Red Floral Tabriz Runner is made
The runner is built up row by row on the loom, and the pile is sheared level once the rows are complete. The knotting has to stay even from one end of the runner to the other.
Turn the rug over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. Those irregularities are most visible in the small flowers, where each one is tied separately.
Sizing this Red Floral Tabriz Runner
At 330 x 85 cm, this Red Floral Tabriz Runner suits a long hallway or a kitchen galley. Its length of about 3.3 m fits a passage of that size, with the ends of the runner showing at each side.
For the width, a hallway about 105 to 125 cm wide leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side of the runner. The red field suits timber floors and light walls, and the navy border anchors the runner against bare boards.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so foot traffic wears it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the runner sliding on timber or tiles, which matters most on a hallway floor. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, so vacuum the floor beneath the runner often and lift it now and then.
