Red Farahan Vintage Runner
This red Farahan vintage runner is a double hand knotted wool runner measuring 351 x 73 cm. It is a Persian runner from Iran, with a red field, a column of cream diamond medallions and a navy border.
The design up close
A column of cream diamond medallions runs down the red field, one after another from end to end. Each medallion has a blue-centred rosette of red, green and blue flowers at its heart, with small leaves and buds in brown and green spreading out from it. Thin olive and brown lines outline every medallion, so each one stands out clearly against the red. The medallions are evenly spaced, so the runner keeps a steady rhythm from the first to the last.
Between the medallions the red ground is filled with diamonds of darker red and navy, each holding small white, pink and cream flowers in its corners. The darker diamonds give the field a steady rhythm between the cream shapes. These diamonds link the cream medallions into one continuous line down the runner.
The border is built from a wide navy band with small cream, red and blue flower motifs, framed by a red outer edge. Along the border the navy band carries those flowers at regular intervals, and the red guard stripe gives the runner a clean edge. The red outer edge and navy band together give the runner a firm outline.Taken as a whole, this red Farahan vintage runner keeps one medallion, one diamond and one border repeating down its length.
How it is made
Our records note that this red Farahan vintage runner is double hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Our records note German dyes. Wool has a natural spring, so the pile stays comfortable underfoot. A red runner like this one warms up a neutral hallway, and it pairs well with cream walls and natural timber.
Sizing a red Farahan vintage runner
At 351 x 73 cm this red Farahan vintage runner covers about 2.6 square metres. Its width suits a hallway about 93 to 113 cm wide, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. Its length suits a stretch of floor between two doors, where it can be seen from both ends, and it also works in a kitchen galley or beside a bed.
On timber or pale tiles this red Farahan vintage runner stands out clearly, and the navy border frames the red field. Lay it so that its ends sit clear of doorways.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
