Red Ardebil Persian Runner
This red Ardebil Persian runner was hand double knotted in Iran in lamb’s wool and measures 332 x 105 cm. Deep red fills the field, with a row of five medallions running its length in navy, cream and blue, framed by a dark brown and green border.
The design up close
The red Ardebil Persian runner is built around a line of five medallions. At each end sits a dark star medallion in navy and black, with red at its heart. Between them, two round rosettes in red and blue flank a larger cream star with a red centre.
Small cream, green and blue sprigs fill the red ground around the medallions, so the field reads as a busy, detailed pattern rather than a plain colour. Cream corner pieces sit at both ends, each with red detailing that echoes the medallions.
The outer border is dark brown and green, with rows of small red and cream motifs, and a thin green line runs along its edge. Across this red Ardebil Persian runner, the dark border frames the field and keeps the medallions as the focus.
Walking the length of this runner, the medallions line up one after another, so the eye travels from end to end rather than settling on one motif. The red ground stays strong between them, and the cream corners give each end a clear finish.
What a Persian rug is
Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing: a rug hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. Wool is soft and resilient, while silk adds sheen and fine detail.
How this runner is made
Hand double knotting builds this red Ardebil Persian runner one knot at a time. Its pure lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft feel underfoot. Our records note German dyes.
Sizing this red Ardebil Persian runner for a hallway
At 332 x 105 cm this runner covers about 3.5 square metres. Its width suits a hallway, and a hallway about 125 to 145 cm wide leaves roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. The runner also suits a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed, where its length can run with the room.
The runner’s colour works well with timber floors and cream or white walls, and the medallions give a long corridor a clear focal point. The dark brown and green border also makes everyday marks less obvious on a hallway floor. A runner in this colour suits a busy corridor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your red Ardebil Persian runner on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
