Red Ardebil Persian Runner
This red Ardebil Persian runner is a Persian runner, hand double knotted in Iran from pure lamb’s wool. It measures 325 x 80 cm, or about 2.6 square metres, and is built for a long, narrow passage. Hooked red medallions run down a deep navy field, with gold and grey-green stripes beside them.
The design of this red Ardebil Persian runner up close
Down the length of the runner, large medallions sit on a deep navy field. Each one is red with a brighter red and orange centre, and its outline is stepped and hooked, edged in dark brown and gold.
Between the medallions, the navy ground carries red and orange scrolls that curl around the medallions and link them together. Narrow stripes in gold, grey-green and brick red run along both sides of the field. Each medallion sits on the centre line of the runner, so they run in a line from one end to the other.
The outer edge carries a border of small red and navy diamonds set on olive green. This red Ardebil Persian runner has a bold contrast of red on navy, which suits a plain hallway with pale walls. A timber floor and light walls let the red medallions read clearly from the front door.
Persian rugs and their weave
Every Persian rug is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, and this runner is built the same way, knot by knot. That is why no two are alike, even when two runners share a design.
How it is made
Our records note that this red Ardebil Persian runner is hand double knotted. Turn the runner over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Sizing it for your room
This red Ardebil Persian runner measures 325 x 80 cm, so it is a hallway piece rather than a room rug. A hallway that suits it should be about 100 to 120 cm wide: the runner’s 80 cm plus about 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side.
At 3.25 m long, it suits a long, straight hallway or a galley kitchen, where it can run most of the way along the floor. Because it is narrow, lay it with an even gap from the skirting boards on each side, so it sits centred in the hall.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
A hallway runner gets more foot traffic than most rugs, so turn it end to end as well as around.
