Pink Vintage Overdyed Runner
This pink vintage overdyed runner measures 288 x 78 cm and is made of wool. Its terracotta ground carries two gold octagonal medallions outlined in pink, joined by angular arms in pink and grey. It is a vintage piece, shaved back and over-dyed in pink, which softens the whole runner.
The design up close
Two octagonal medallions sit along this pink vintage overdyed runner, one toward each end. Each is ochre gold with a pink outline and a small hooked centre in pink and grey green. Between them, a small pale grey green lozenge marks the middle of the field.
Stepped, angular arms reach out from both medallions. They are drawn in pink, grey and dark brown lines on the terracotta ground, and they bend back on themselves, which gives the runner its zigzag rhythm. Small purple flowers sit in the field near each end. Thin pink and grey lines follow the outline of each arm, so the shape stays sharp even where the colour has softened.
This pink vintage overdyed runner has a narrow cream border at each end, with pink and purple flowers and vines. The border gives each medallion a clear frame.
Why the colour looks worn
Like other overdyed rugs and vintage rugs, this one has a softer finish than a new piece. Vintage runners are shaved back and then over-dyed to intensify the design, and here the pink brings out the outlines of the medallions and arms against the terracotta. Lighter, worn patches show in the field, which reflect the age of the runner.
How a pink vintage overdyed runner is made
Our records note that this runner is hand double knotted from wool. Because it has been shaved, its surface is low and even, which suits a hallway where people walk every day. The over-dye was used to intensify the design of the runner, so the pattern reads clearly as you walk along it.
Sizing it for your hallway
At 288 x 78 cm the runner covers about 2.2 square metres. A pink vintage overdyed runner of this width suits a hallway about 100 to 120 cm wide, with roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. Its length lets it run from the front door toward the back of the house, or along a kitchen galley where you walk most.
Beside a bed, the runner can run down one side with its length following the bed. In a long, narrow room, it can be the one piece of colour on the floor, with plain walls behind it.
Looking after your runner
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it end to end every six to twelve months so foot traffic wears it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the runner sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a runner under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
