Peachy Cream Overdyed Rug
This peachy cream overdyed rug is a vintage piece in wool, and it measures 387 x 296 cm. Its field is a soft peach, with blue, cream and pale green patterns that stand out against the warm ground. The faded finish gives it a worn, gentle look that suits both modern and traditional homes.
The design up close
The field is a soft peach, faded and worn in places. At the centre a star-like medallion layers blue, teal and tan shapes, with small pale flowers and a few red accents around its edge. Small sprigs and flowers spread out from it across the peach ground.
Each corner of the field holds a blue and cream scroll, with curling leaves that run toward the edges. A narrow cream band frames the field, and thin red and tan lines separate the bands from one another.
The outer border is the most visible change from the field: a sage and pale green ground with rows of small teardrop motifs in cream and tan. Its narrow outer edge is detailed as well, so the rug reads as a framed piece. From a distance the lighter and darker patches across the ground blend into a warm, soft finish, while up close the blue and green accents show clearly.
Vintage and overdyed: what the finish means
Vintage rugs are older pieces, and overdyed rugs have been dyed again to bring out their design. Our records note that the peach background was over-dyed, which helps the blues and greens stand out. The worn areas give this peachy cream overdyed rug a relaxed look.
How a peachy cream overdyed rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. The rug measures 387 x 296 cm, so it covers about 11.5 square metres of floor. Its size lets the medallion sit in the middle of the field with a wide border of pattern around it.
Sizing it for your room
At 387 x 296 cm the rug covers about 11.5 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 83 cm of rug showing past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table.
A peachy cream overdyed rug this size suits a large dining room. A table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves roughly 74 cm of rug at each end and 98 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. Warm timber, cream walls and soft blue or green furnishings all sit well with the peach ground.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
