Navy Blue Kashmiri Rug
This navy blue Kashmiri rug is a tribal and traditional design made in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool, and it measures 120 x 76 cm. Five diamond medallions run down a navy field, with a border of tan, cream and dark brown geometric bands.
The design up close
The navy field of this navy blue Kashmiri rug holds five diamond medallions stacked down the centre. Each is tan and gold with a cream centre and a dark outline, and the spacing between them is even from top to bottom. Tan and cream triangles point in from both sides between the medallions, so the centre reads as a column framed by stepped shapes.
Several bands of cream, tan and dark brown geometric motifs make up the border, and a black outer edge frames the whole rug. The navy ground is the same deep tone from edge to edge, so the tan and cream figures are what break up the field.
Looking down the rug, the medallions line up on the centre line, and the stepped shapes on each side repeat the same tan and cream, which keeps the design steady from one end to the other.
Afghanistan and its weaving tradition
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs with a heavier, more relaxed feel.
Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces, and this rug belongs to the tribal side of it.
Our Afghan tribal rugs carry that bold character, and this navy blue Kashmiri rug is one of them.
How it is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this navy blue Kashmiri rug is made from lamb’s wool.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with slight irregularities where the knots were tied by hand. The back is a useful check, because the medallions and stepped shapes should appear there too.
Sizing a navy blue Kashmiri rug
At 120 x 76 cm the rug covers about 0.9 square metres. It suits a hallway corner, a bedside or an entrance.
Thick wool and a patterned field hide everyday wear, so a navy blue Kashmiri rug holds up well in entrances and hallways.
It is shorter than a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, so it sits best under a coffee table or beside a bed. In a living room, place it where an armchair can sit with its front legs resting on it.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
