Midnight Blue Hamedan Runner
This midnight blue Hamedan runner is a Persian runner woven in Iran, measuring 398 x 90 cm, about 3.6 square metres. Its deep navy ground carries floral sprays from end to end, edged by a narrow red border.
The design up close
Floral sprays rise from the navy ground in soft lilac, cream, rose, gold and green. The largest bouquet sits near the middle, a cluster of red and cream blooms with lilac leaves, and smaller sprays repeat along both sides toward each end. The spaces between them stay dark, so the navy colour shows strongly around every spray.
The border is a narrow red band with a small dotted pattern in cream and gold. It frames the runner without competing with the sprays, so the floral pattern reads as the main feature from either end. A runner this length is best viewed from one end, where the bouquet and sprays line up along the centre.
This midnight blue Hamedan runner has the most colour at its centre, where the bouquet is densest, and the colour thins out toward the ends. Walking along the runner, you pass from the dense bouquet to lighter sprays and back to the navy ground.
Hamedan weaving and this runner
Hamedan is a province in western Iran, and rugs as Hamedan are woven in the many villages around the city. Most are tied with the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, and warm reds, blues and camel tones are common. Blue, as in this midnight blue Hamedan runner, is one of those common colours. Here the blue is deep and dark, and the warm sprays are what break it up.
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran. Our records note hand double knotting for this runner, and it is made from pure wool.
Sizing your midnight blue Hamedan runner
At 398 x 90 cm this midnight blue Hamedan runner suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. For a hallway, allow a floor width of about 110 to 130 cm, which is the runner’s 90 cm plus 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side. Beside a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, it can run down one side with its 90 cm width reaching toward the frame.
Midnight blue sits well on timber floors, where the navy ground contrasts with the wood. A midnight blue Hamedan runner is a natural choice for a long hallway with timber boards. The narrow form also suits a kitchen galley, where the length of the runner follows the benches.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
