Lilac Vintage Overdyed Rug
This lilac vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted wool, measuring 364 x 278 cm, or about 10.1 square metres. Its lilac field carries a design picked out in mustard, cream and dark teal, and the over-dye runs across the whole rug.
The design of this lilac vintage overdyed rug up close
A lobed medallion sits in the centre of this lilac vintage overdyed rug, with mustard and cream petals around a dark teal core. Fine teal lines trace the petals and scrolls, so the outline stays clear against the lilac.
The field around it is covered with small flowers, scrolls and leaves in mustard, olive, teal and navy, spread evenly across the ground. Lighter streaks of lilac cross the middle of the rug, so the colour is not even everywhere.
The border has a band of small mustard rosettes on a grey-lilac ground, with several narrow stripes framing the field. The rows of rosettes give the edge a steady rhythm. The rosettes are the same size all round, so the border looks even on all four sides.
How it is made
Our records note that this lilac vintage overdyed rug is hand double knotted. Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, one at a time, and the rug was then over-dyed in lilac, which gives it its colour and brings the pattern forward. The over-dye went on to the finished rug, so the mustard and teal of the original design still show through it.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Sizing it for your room
At 364 x 278 cm, this lilac vintage overdyed rug suits a large living room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 72 cm of rug showing past each end.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 62 cm of rug at each end and 89 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. A rug of this width suits a living room where the sofa and armchairs sit on it around a coffee table.
Colour in your room
The lilac ground of this lilac vintage overdyed rug sits well with cream and grey furnishings, and the mustard rosettes pick up warm yellow in cushions or a lamp. The teal lines also echo dark blue or grey pieces, so the rug works in a room with cooler tones. A pale timber floor brings out the lilac, and cream walls keep the mustard warm.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
