Light Blue Super Kazak Rug
This light blue Super Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 141 x 106 cm. Its light blue ground carries a central medallion in red and cream, with patterns in salmon and navy blue around it.
The design up close
A diamond medallion in red and cream sits at the centre, with a blue star in its middle and a stepped outline. Smaller medallions in red and cream stand above and below it, and small red florals fill the gaps. Navy accents mark the points of the central medallion.
Across this light blue Super Kazak rug, the cream border carries small red and navy motifs in a repeating pattern, and a red band runs along the outer edge. The border gives the blue field a light frame, so the medallions stand out clearly.
Where Kazak designs come from
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. Weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs in recent decades, and this light blue Super Kazak rug takes its medallions from that line.
How it is made
This light blue Super Kazak rug is hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom and the pile was sheared level afterwards. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that handwork leaves.
Sizing your light blue Super Kazak rug
At 141 by 106 cm, the rug covers about 1.5 square metres, which makes it a small piece. It suits an entrance, a reading corner or a bedside, rather than a full lounge setting. Its 141 cm length runs almost the full width of a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide, so it works well beside a bed where bare feet land in the morning. A rug this size is easy to move, which suits a room that changes often. Before you decide, mark its outline on the floor with masking tape to see how it sits.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
