Hand Knotted Tribal Wool Rug
The Ocean Garden is a hand knotted tribal wool rug with a sky blue field covered in flowers, vines and large stylised motifs in coral, teal, ivory and lime green. It is made from wool spun by hand, and its size can be confirmed in our showroom.
The design up close
Across this hand knotted tribal wool rug, a column of larger motifs runs down the centre. Each one is a framed shape in navy or teal, filled with coral, ivory and lime. At the top, a pale cream shape with a navy outline sits between two smaller coral motifs, and similar groups repeat further down the field. Pairs of motifs on either side of the column mirror one another roughly across the centre.
Between the large motifs, small flowers, leaves and thin curling vines fill the sky blue ground in pink, cream, lime, mustard and teal. Very little plain blue shows, so the rug reads as one busy, even pattern from end to end. The lime green flowers are the brightest accents on the field, and the pink ones are the smallest.
The outlines wander a little from one shape to the next, so no two motifs are exactly alike. A narrow border of small pink, cream and teal flowers frames the whole field, and fringe finishes both short ends.
How this hand knotted tribal wool rug is made
This hand knotted tribal wool rug is built knot by knot, each one tied by hand as the design rises row by row. Turn it over and the pattern shows on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves. Yarn spun by hand is slightly uneven in thickness, which gives the pile a soft, natural look.
Sizing it for your room
Ask us in the showroom to confirm the size of this hand knotted tribal wool rug, and compare it with your floor and furniture before you decide. The sky blue ground suits pale timber floors and white or grey walls, while the coral and lime bring colour into a plain room.
A hand knotted tribal wool rug with a pattern this busy works best where the eye has room to rest, such as a lounge with plain upholstery or a bedroom with calm bedding. Keep the rest of the furniture simple so the motifs can carry the room.
Where it suits best
The busy pattern also hides everyday marks, which makes the rug a practical choice for a family room or a hallway. Pick up the coral in a cushion or a lamp, or the teal in a chair, so the rug feels part of the room rather than a separate piece.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
