Grey Gazney Rug
This grey Gazney rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in wool and measures 177 x 123 cm. Its grey field carries a sparse design of cream, gold and sage motifs inside a wide cream border.
The design up close
On this grey Gazney rug the field has a loose, open design. Small cream, gold and sage leaves and blossoms are spaced across the whole ground, with no single medallion taking the centre. Sage and grey-green shapes fill the spaces between them, so from a distance the field reads as soft texture. The motifs are drawn in thin lines and small blocks of colour, so the design stays light on the grey ground. The grey ground keeps the motifs soft, and the cream border gives a clear edge to the rug.
The border is cream, with rows of grey-green rosettes and palmette flowers. A thin dark line marks the edge of the field, and the inner border is narrow and plain cream. Fringe finishes the top and bottom ends. From a short distance, the rosettes read as a repeating band, and up close each one has its own petals and centre.
A grey ground with a cream border is quiet, so this grey Gazney rug suits rooms that already have strong colour in the cushions or art.
Afghanistan and its weaving tradition
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and the Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this grey Gazney rug sits on the calmer side of that range. This rug has a wide cream border, so its outer edge reads as a light frame around the grey centre.
How a grey Gazney rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row, and the pile is then sheared level. Because the field is grey, the cream border and motifs stand out clearly against it. Wool gives the pile a soft hand and suits a rug with open, quiet patterning.
Sizing it for your room
At 177 x 123 cm the rug covers about 2.2 square metres. Across the foot of a queen bed, 153 cm wide in Australia, its 177 cm length overhangs by about 12 cm on each side. In a living room, a grey Gazney rug this size works in front of an armchair, with the chair’s front legs resting on its grey field. It also suits an entrance, where the cream border is easy to see. Its grey tones also suit timber, pale stone and light walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
