Gold Vintage Overdyed Rug
This gold vintage overdyed rug measures 322 x 234 cm and is made of wool. Its pale cream gold ground carries a large central medallion in faded blush and grey green, with floral sprays across the field and a worn grey green border. It is a vintage piece, shaved back and over-dyed in gold to intensify the design.
The design up close
A large medallion sits at the centre of this gold vintage overdyed rug, its outline softened to a faded grey green. Inside it, blush pink and grey tones show through the gold, with small flowers scattered through the middle. The medallion is larger than the sprays around it, and its outline is broken in places, so the shape reads softly from a distance.
Around the medallion, the field is covered in floral sprays of grey, green and pink, with fern-like leaves in places. The corners carry scrolling flowers in grey green and khaki, and fine khaki and pink lines run along the border, so the frame feels light.
The pale ground lets the grey floral sprays read clearly across this gold vintage overdyed rug.
What the gold over-dye does
Over-dyeing has softened the colour across the rug. The gold brings a warm, light tone to the cream, and the blush pink and greens come through more clearly in the centre. Like other vintage rugs and overdyed rugs, this one shows its age in faded edges and lighter patches in the field. Pale rugs like this one show dust and marks sooner than dark ones, so a quick vacuum each week keeps the cream ground clean.
How a gold vintage overdyed rug is made
Our records note that this rug is hand double knotted from wool. The over-dye was used to intensify the design and patterns, which is why the medallion and floral sprays read more easily than the faded border.
Sizing it for your room
At 322 x 234 cm the rug covers about 7.5 square metres, a size for a large living room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 51 cm of rug at each end, so the front legs of the sofa and an armchair can rest on it. A dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, leaves roughly 41 cm at each end and 67 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back.
A gold vintage overdyed rug of this size suits cream walls, timber floors and linen furniture. Its pale ground suits a room with timber floors, where the rug can be the softest point of colour.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
