Gold Tabriz Overdyed Rug
This gold Tabriz overdyed rug is a vintage piece of hand double knotted wool, measuring 382 x 292 cm, or about 11.2 square metres. The gold and beige over-dye sits over the whole rug, with the design faint beneath it.
The design of this gold Tabriz overdyed rug up close
The centre holds a faint medallion in grey-white, with small rosettes and scrolled petals that are hard to pick out in places. Its outline breaks up into lighter patches, which gives it a distressed look. Its edges are less sharp than the border, so the medallion reads as a soft shape in the middle of the field.
Mustard and gold patches sit mostly along the left and right sides of the field, with grey-green scrolls and leaves over them. Where the patches thin out on this gold Tabriz overdyed rug, the grey-green scrolls read more clearly.
The border is a grey-green band with beige rosettes and small leaf shapes, framed by thin stripes. It is the most defined part of the rug, so the neutral field stands apart from it. Its colour sits close to the field, so the two read as one soft surface from a distance.
How it is made
Our records note that this gold Tabriz overdyed rug is hand double knotted. Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the finished rug was then over-dyed in gold and beige, which blends the old design into one soft tone. Turn the rug over and the knotting is still visible on the back, with the small irregularities that hand knotting leaves.
Colour in your room
A neutral rug like this suits grey, cream or white walls and pale timber floors, where the gold and beige tones stay calm. The soft colour of this gold Tabriz overdyed rug lets it sit quietly under a dining table as well as a sofa. It also suits a room with grey or taupe furnishings, which match its faded ground.
Sizing it for your room
This gold Tabriz overdyed rug covers about 11.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 81 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and a pair of armchairs can share the rug.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 71 cm of rug at each end and 96 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. At 3.8 m long, the rug also suits a dining room where the table and all its chairs sit on it.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
