Fresh Blue Overdyed Rug
This fresh blue overdyed rug is a vintage piece in wool, and it measures 387 x 287 cm. Its field is a clear sky blue with pale yellow green and cream motifs spread evenly across it. The soft, faded finish keeps the colours cool and light, so it suits both modern and traditional rooms.
The design up close
There is no central medallion. Instead, small flowers, leaves, buds and thin vines fill the field in an all-over pattern, drawn in pale yellow green, sage and cream on the blue ground. The motifs are small and spaced evenly, so the field reads as one soft texture from a distance.
A narrow cream band with a row of small dots frames the field, and a wider blue band with cream leaf scrolls sits outside it. The outer edge carries a thin dotted line, and the darker blue of the outer border gives the lighter field a clear edge.
Up close the pale colours of this fresh blue overdyed rug look mottled, with darker patches where the overdye sits thicker. The yellow green in the field looks slightly mixed with grey, so the rug changes shade as light moves across it.
Vintage and overdyed: what the finish means
Vintage rugs are older pieces, and overdyed rugs have been dyed again to intensify the design. Our records note over-dyeing for this fresh blue overdyed rug, which gives it a blue ground and brings the pattern forward. The worn areas add to its gentle, settled feel.
How a fresh blue overdyed rug is made
Our records note hand double knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. The rug is wool, and it measures 387 x 287 cm, so it covers about 11.1 square metres of floor. Its open, evenly spaced pattern is easy to see from one end of a room to the other.
Sizing it for your room
At 387 x 287 cm the rug covers about 11.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 83 cm of blue showing past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves roughly 74 cm of rug at each end and 94 cm along each side. A fresh blue overdyed rug this size works well in a larger living room, and the pale field suits light timber, cream or grey walls and warm neutral furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
